Anantnag, Apr 01: Peoples Democratic Party President Mehbooba Mufti on Wednesday said orchardists are facing difficulties as fuel for pesticide spraying is not being provided easily, and residents are experiencing LPG shortages, while urging the administration to reopen closed tourist routes and parks in Pahalgam. Speaking to reporters in Anantnag, she said several delegations met her and raised concerns about the closure of routes such as the Bijbehara–Langanbal–Pahalgam road, which restricts access to major tourist destinations. She noted that places like Chandanwari, Baisaran, and Deer Park remain closed, leaving tourists with limited options and forcing many to return disappointed. “This
has badly affected pony owners, resort operators, and others dependent on tourism,” she said, adding that the road should be reopened with proper security arrangements to support those who have invested in tourism infrastructure. “One incident cannot be the reason to keep everything closed,” she added. Mufti highlighted that orchardists are unable to carry out spraying due to limited petrol availability. “People also complain of LPG shortage despite official claims of no scarcity,” she said. She noted that mining-related issues have also affected locals, with vehicles transporting material being seized and fines imposed on poorer residents. She further said private
school teachers are being paid between Rs 5,000 and Rs 10,000, far below the minimum wage. “We will raise this issue in the Assembly and, if needed, bring a bill. They should receive at least Rs 20,000 along with benefits like provident fund,” she added. On daily wagers, Mufti said many have worked for 20 to 25 years in departments such as PHE, Irrigation, R&B, Estates, Health, and Rural Development but remain unregularised. “If they are not regularised now, then when will they be?” she asked, urging the government to review their cases and take action promptly.
