Bandipora, April 5 : A sudden and intense hailstorm struck several upper areas of Bandipora district on Sunday, causing significant damage to standing crops and leaving farmers in distress.

The worst-affected areas include Arin and Dardpora, where large swathes of agricultural land were battered by heavy hailstones. Locals said the storm lasted for a short duration but was powerful enough to flatten crops, particularly affecting orchards and early-season produce.

Farmers expressed deep concern over the losses, stating that they had invested heavily in their fields and were expecting a good yield this season. “Within minutes, everything was destroyed. Our crops have suffered severe damage, and we are left with nothing,” said a distressed farmer from Arin.

Residents of the affected villages have urged the administration to conduct an immediate assessment of the damage and provide adequate compensation to the farmers. They emphasized that many families in these areas rely solely on agriculture for their livelihood.

Meanwhile, officials have been requested to visit the affected locations and ensure that relief measures are put in place without delay.

The hailstorm has once again highlighted the vulnerability of farmers in the region to sudden weather changes, raising calls for better support systems and timely intervention to safeguard their interests. (KNS)
