Srinagar, Apr 08: To strengthen emergency renal care in north Kashmir, Government Medical College (GMC) Baramulla has started in-house emergency dialysis services to provide timely treatment to critically ill patients and reduce referrals to tertiary care hospitals outside the district.

The initiative has been launched under the supervision of the college’s Principal, Prof. (Dr.) Majid Jahangir Shahdar, and was formalised during a high-level meeting held on March 30, 2026.

Prof. Majid said that, as per the approved protocol, all patients presenting to the Emergency Department or admitted under General Medicine who require urgent dialysis shall first undergo detailed clinical evaluation and stabilisation by the treating medical team.

“Following confirmation of indication, such patients shall be referred to the Dialysis Centre for feasibility assessment, consent formalities, documentation, and readiness of equipment and consumables,” he said.

The Principal said that essential consumables, including dialysis catheters and Permacaths, shall be made available through the Ayushman Bharat section and AMRIT Pharmacy for eligible beneficiaries to ensure uninterrupted and timely service delivery.

As per officials, priority will be given to critically ill patients and first-time emergency dialysis cases, with procedures scheduled on a same-day or next-day basis depending on clinical urgency.

Previously, patients from north Kashmir had to travel to Srinagar for emergency dialysis-related vascular access procedures, often resulting in delays during critical hours.

Medical Superintendent Dr. Parvaiz Masoodi said the initiative is expected to reduce the burden of referrals to tertiary care hospitals in Srinagar.

“With the service now available in-house, this initiative is expected to cater to a large population in north Kashmir, ensuring timely access to emergency renal care closer to home and significantly strengthening the hospital’s emergency response capabilities,” he said.

The move has been widely welcomed as a step towards enhancing specialised healthcare services at GMC Baramulla and improving patient access across the region.

The March 30 meeting was attended by Registrar Academics, Medical Superintendent of Associated Hospital GMC Baramulla, Heads of Departments of Surgery, Anaesthesia, and General Medicine, CVTS surgeons, in-charge Dialysis Centre, and in-charge Ayushman Bharat section.

Officials said the facility was made possible through the efforts and coordination of Head of Department Anaesthesia Dr. Waseem Salman, along with the CVTS surgery team, who helped establish the emergency vascular access and dialysis workflow within the hospital.
