If things remain unchanged, Kashmir will lose another generation to the growing influence of drug addiction. There are certain alarming revelations made by the medical experts as they believe 10 to 12 percent of school going youth indulge in drugs and take other intoxicants which include whitener fluids. Due to certain social and psychological forces our youngsters are exhibiting certain dangerous traits. The situation that the Kashmir has been through from last three decade has giving rise to a number of ailments which were unfamiliar and unknown before. Not only have the women folk been put under tremendous physical and psychological pressure but also the children are displaying strange predilections. If there is increase in psychological diseases in women folk; children are moving to drugs to overcome the loss and fear which has been instilled in their minds as a result of prolonged issues. The situation is more disturbing in the family wherein there are widows and half widows. As these families lack male supervision and reliable family atmosphere, they are more prone and susceptible to harmful influences. However, what makes the situation even worse is the absence of clear policy on part of Health Department to counter the effects. Before we reach the impasse there is need to do something effective. First, we must start from our home, because if society has to be set right we have to begin by setting our home right. Parents have an important part to play in this regard; the more vigilant and watchful they remain the less are the chances of these things to crop up. We, as conscious members of a lively society have a role to play. We must make youngsters aware about the harmful effects of this menace. Various NGOs that are functioning in Jammu and Kashmir and the medical fraternity should join hands to fight against this growing hazard. These agencies are better equipped, and better placed to meet the challenge. Besides the government, particularly the Health Department must come up with a comprehensive policy which can help arresting the growth of such evil tendencies. The drug menace can consume our young generation, so wake up!
