Srinagar, Apr 3 : Rains lashed most parts of Kashmir on Friday with the Meteorological Department forecasting the wet spell to continue for the next 24 hours, even as authorities activated helplines and issued an advisory asking travellers to avoid avalanche-prone areas.
A MeT official told that a fresh western disturbance was active over the region. "Moderate to heavy rainfall lashed the plains, including Srinagar city, since Friday morning. The weather activity will continue for the next 24 hours," the official said.
The higher reaches, including Gulmarg and Sonamarg, may receive moderate snowfall, while gusty winds, thunderstorm and hailstorm were also likely at isolated places, the official added.
An independent weather forecaster Faizan Arif said that nowfall is possible over higher reaches and light to moderate snowfall at middle reaches, he in the next 24 hours.
Meanwhile, the District Emergency Operation Centre (DEOC) Srinagar has activated helplines — 0194-2483651, 0194-2457552 and 0194-2457543. Citizens can also reach out on WhatsApp numbers 9103998355, 9103998356 and 9103998357, officials said.
