Srinagar, Apr 5 : Senior Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader and former minister Naeem Akhtar on Sunday accused the ruling Jammu & Kashmir National Conference of following a “playbook” of targeting critics by attempting to silence them through jail or intimidation.

Akhtar said such practices were not new and alleged that the party had historically acted against those who questioned its leadership. He also drew a parallel with the Bharatiya Janata Party at the national level, claiming that dissenters are often labelled “anti-national” and face action through central agencies.

Referring to the recent controversy involving PDP legislator Waheed-ur-Rehman Para, Akhtar alleged that attempts were being made to target him politically. He said that if the National Conference had control over law enforcement, Para would have been arrested.

Akhtar also criticised a minister in the government for using “vulgar language,” stating that such conduct reflected poorly on governance. He questioned the ability of those holding key portfolios such as education, health and social welfare to discharge their duties effectively if they lacked restraint in public discourse.

Describing Para as an “outstanding young leader,” Akhtar said he represented not just his party but the wider region of Jammu and Kashmir. He alleged that efforts were underway to “demonise” Para and push him back into jail.(KNS).
