Apni Party Chief raises poverty, housing issues in Srinagar
Srinagar, Apr 04: Apni Party President Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari on Saturday reiterated his demand for New Delhi to initiate a meaningful dialogue with the people of Jammu and Kashmir, while calling for policy measures to boost economic growth in Srinagar.
Addressing a public convention organised by the party at Maisuma, Bukhari said residents of Srinagar have remained economically deprived despite repeatedly supporting traditional political parties over the past decades.
He said the strong voter turnout in the Assembly elections reflected a clear shift towards peace and stability, and added that the ruling dispensation should have responded with concrete measures for economic upliftment, particularly in areas like Maisuma and adjoining localities.
Bukhari criticised traditional political parties for failing to improve living conditions in the city, stating that poverty and housing constraints continue to affect several areas, including downtown Srinagar. He said inadequate housing and limited financial resources are contributing to social challenges.
He also raised concerns over the lack of reservation benefits for Srinagar residents, urging their inclusion under the Economically Weaker Sections category to improve access to government jobs and welfare schemes.
Referring to the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019, Bukhari blamed regional parties for their role over the years and said the Centre should now engage with the people, especially the youth, to bridge the trust deficit.
Senior party leaders, including Ghulam Hassan Mir, Rafi Ahmad Mir and Mohammad Ashraf Mir, also addressed the gathering.
