Leh, Apr 08: The Union Territory of Ladakh has started a bamboo plantation initiative along with a variety of flowering species, to enhance the region’s ecological landscape.

Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena, said the first of its kind initiative aims to enrich Ladakh’s floral diversity and promote environmental sustainability.

The bamboo saplings have been introduced along with flowering trees such as Gulmohar, Jacaranda, Bougainvillea, and Amaltas species not traditionally found in the cold desert.

The saplings were transported from Delhi and kept under controlled conditions for around 10 days to help them acclimatise to the harsh climatic conditions of the region.

After the acclimatisation process, the plants were experimentally planted in and around Lok Niwas in Leh. Officials stated that a dedicated team of horticulture experts has been tasked with closely monitoring the growth and adaptability of these saplings.

Experts say if the experiment proves successful, it could open new avenues for introducing diverse plant species. The project will be evaluated before expanding it to other parts.
