Hutmurrah (Anantnag), Apr 08: Taja Begum, a 70-year-old woman from south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, has become a social media sensation through her podcast appearances and her homemade pickle brand. Known lovingly as “Appa,” she shares humorous and authentic stories with her grandson, Saadath Mohi-ud-din, attracting millions of views across social media platforms.
Her rise to recognition began at home, where her grandson noticed her natural ability to connect, narrate, and bring smiles effortlessly. “I never planned to create something big. I just wanted people to hear her the way we hear her at home. She has always been this lively, wise presence, and I felt the world needed that kind of positivity,” said Saadath Mohi-ud-din.
The podcast featuring Appa quickly found an audience. People were drawn not only to her humour but also to the comfort her presence offered, like listening to a grandmother who speaks truths without judgment.
Building on her popularity, Appa launched “The Aapa Foods,” a brand rooted in traditional recipes and homemade care. Each jar of pickle reflects the same sincerity she brings to her words. Her efforts were recognised with the Best Agri-Food Brand award from Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir.
Her son, Gh Mohi-ud-din Bhat, said, “We always saw her strength at home, but today the world is seeing it too. At this age, she inspires not just us, but thousands of people. Her happiness matters the most, and we are grateful to see her doing what she loves.”
Appa challenges long-held stereotypes about age. She shows that purpose does not fade with time. It evolves. Whether speaking into a microphone or preparing anchar, she conveys that life continues if one remains active and engaged.
She also addressed youth with a simple message: stay away from drugs and focus on meaningful pursuits. “Life is not meant to be wasted. Keep trying, keep working until you achieve something, don’t stop. And stay away from things that destroy you, not build you,” she said.
Appa’s deep appreciation for family is central to her journey.
“My children keep me happy, and that is my biggest blessing. I pray every parent gets the same love and respect from their sons and daughters,” she added.
While her grandson helped bring her story into the public eye, Appa remains at the centre of it. At 70, she continues to share joy, wisdom, and purpose, reminding people that it is never too late to start something new.
