Srinagar, May 30: National Cadet Corps (NCC)’s girls unit of National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar on Tuesday organized an essay competition on the theme of “Plastic free Srinagar” to beat plastic pollution as part of World Environmental Day celebrations.
The prize distribution ceremony was presided over by Registrar NIT Srinagar Prof. (Dr.) Syed Kaiser Bukhari, who was Chief Guest, Dean Students Welfare; Prof. Abdul Liman was ‘Guest of Honor’ on the occasion.
Associate NCC Officer (ANO), NCC Dr. Janani L, Dr. Srinibash Mishra (SAS Coordinator), Dr. Dinesh Kumar Rajendran and other faculty members were present on the occasion.
In his special message, Director NIT, Prof. (Dr.) Sudhakar Yedla complemented the NCC cadets for taking active participation in environment related activities on the campus.
“As cadets, you have the potential to make a significant impact on the environment through actions and influence others to join Caravan. Our responsibility is to protect, preserve natural resources and promote sustainable practices in our society,” he said.
Addressing the gathering, Institute’s Registrar Prof. Bukhari appreciated the NCC coordinators for organizing the essay competition on the relevant theme.
“The aim of organizing such events is to raise awareness and encourage action for the protection and preservation of the environment,” he said.
Prof. Bukhari said the developed countries have been preaching environmental conservation campaigns to the world for decades but they fail to implement those policies in their respective nations. They are the largest generators of pollution and carbon dioxide, he said.
“Actions are crucial to save the environment and create a sustainable future. By taking steps to address environmental challenges, we can make a real difference and inspire others to join the cause,” he said.
Prof. Bukhari said there is a need for collaborative efforts among countries, communities, and individuals to tackle these issues comprehensively and holistically.
Later both Registrar Prof. Bukhari, DSW Prof. Liman felicitated the winners, provided them certificates and mementoes. In the essay competition, Hilal Ahmad Bhat and Aparna Kashyap (CED) bagged the first and second position respectively.
Similarly in the drawing competition conducted under the theme of India’s G20 presidency, Ananya Jha (MEC) and Tabish Gulzar (MEC) bagged the 1st and 2nd positions respectively.
In extempore speech category, Sanskruti Kakad (EC) and Aarju Rani (CED) bagged the 1st and 2nd positions respectively.
At the function, Anshika was also praised for bagging ‘Best NCC Cadet’ during the Annual Training Camp that was held at Rangreth Srinagar in May 2023. Later a pledge ceremony regarding the importance of preserving the environment was held on the occasion.
