Srinagar, Sept 08: Jammu and Kashmir National Conference President Dr Farooq Abdullah and Vice President Omar Abdullah, led the party in offering floral tributes and Fatiha at the “Mazar-e-Quaid” in Naseem Bagh, following the 42nd death anniversary of “Sher-e-Kashmir” Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah.
Joined by numerous party functionaries, the duo offered Fatiha and floral tributes at the final resting places of Sher-e-Kashmir and Madar-e-Meharban. Earlier a Majlis of Quran Khawani was also held at the Mazar, the party said in a statement issued here.
Similar commemorative functions were held at all the party district headquarters across Kashmir division, Jammu division and Ladakh.
At a function held at Sher-e-Kashmir Bhawan, Jammu, Quran Khawani was performed, which was organised by G H Malik, a senior leader. The participants prayed for peace to the departed soul.
NC Provincial President Rattan Lal Gupta, while praising Sheikh Abdullah, discussed various aspects of his life and highlighted his contributions to improving the conditions for the weaker and downtrodden sections of society.
“Sher–e-Kashmir did the land reforms by abolishing Jagirdari system and giving land to the tiller was a historical step,” he said. “Sheikh Abdullah was one of the tallest and visionary leaders of the era of Mahatma Gandhi and Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan, His secular and progressive outlook would continue to be a source of inspiration for generations. His dedication and sacrifice for the nation cannot be forgotten.”
Gupta said the best tribute to “Sher-e-Kashmir” will be to strengthen amity among Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs. He urged party workers to take a pledge to uphold and preserve the legacy of amity, brotherhood and communal harmony bequeathed by him.
Babu Rampaul, former minister and Central Zone President, in his address, praised Sheikh Abdullah’s slogan of ‘Hindu, Muslim, Sikh Itihaad’ and its resonance throughout Jammu and Kashmir. He highlighted Sheikh Abdullah’s dedication to fighting for the rights of oppressed sections of society, regardless of caste, creed, or religion
Sheikh Bashir Ahmad, Provincial Secretary Jammu in his tributes said, “Sheikh Mohd Abdullah shall be remembered for his contributions forever as he has worked to uplift downtrodden and poor people.”
