Jammu Nov 06: Jammu & Kashmir National Conference (NC) on Wednesday celebrated the passing of a resolution in the J&K Assembly for the restoration of special status to the erstwhile state. The resolution, moved by Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary and seconded by Cabinet Minister Sakina Masood, was passed in the Assembly with a majority.
Following the move, celebrations were held at Sher-e-Kashmir Bhawan in Jammu which was attended by senior leaders, party members and supporters who expressed their support for the initiative.
Speaking on the occasion, NC provincial president Rattan Lal Gupta praised Surinder Choudhary’s bold move. “This resolution is a step towards reversing the injustice done on August 5, 2019, as it witnessed the unilateral revocation of our special status. Today’s resolution rekindles hope for the people of J&K, especially in securing our land and job rights, which are at risk without special protections.”
Gupta extended his heartfelt congratulations to the party president Dr Farooq Abdullah, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Dy CM Surinder Choudhary, acknowledging their “steadfast commitment” to the cause of the restoration of the special status of J&K. He reiterated the NC’s unwavering stand on the restoration of J&K’s special status and statehood, emphasising that these measures are vital for preserving the unique identity and interests of the people of the region.
The provincial president pointed out that other states, including Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat, benefit from special protections, and even Andhra Pradesh is actively pursuing special status. “Jammu & Kashmir is in urgent need of similar protections to safeguard its resources and shield itself from exploitative elements, such as the liquor mafia, mining mafia, and contractors from outside,” he said.
The NC leader called upon all citizens and political entities to unite for the rightful restoration of J&K’s special status. He reaffirmed that the National Conference remains committed to advocating for the aspirations of J&K’s people, promising that the party will continue to fight for justice, the dignity of the region’s residents and the future of the coming generations.
