Srinagar, Aug 07: Jammu and Kashmir National Conference President Dr Farooq Abdullah on Wednesday emphasised the importance of political participation of women by increasing their representation in decision-making positions. He said the party has been a trailblazer in this regard.
Addressing a one-day convention of the Women’s Wing of Kashmir Province at the party headquarters here, Dr Farooq said, “NC is committed to promoting women’s political participation, ensuring that decision-making processes within the party are inclusive and responsive.”
He stressed the importance of empowering women and encouraging their active involvement in politics. The meeting, according to a statement, was convened by State Women’s Wing President Adv Shameema Firdous and Co-convened by Women’s Wing Provincial President Er Sabiya Qadri.
Shameema Firdous acknowledged the pivotal role played by Dr Farooq Abdullah-led government in 1996 in introducing reservation in the Panchayati Raj legislation of Jammu & Kashmir. She pledged to continue providing resources and support to women, enabling them to participate in politics safely.
“It is important to recognise and address the challenges faced by women, who are often the most affected by the circumstances in Kashmir,” she said.
Er Sabiya echoed Shameem Firdous’s sentiments, saying that successive NC governments in Jammu and Kashmir have been working towards empowering women through various policies and initiatives. She praised the resilience and courage displayed by women in the region.
“There is a need to support and uplift women in Kashmir given the unique difficulties they face in the region’s complex dynamics,” she said.
