Jammu, Feb 16: Natrang presented the Hindi play “Tauba-Tauba” as part of its weekly theatre series, Sunday Theatre. The play, written by Rajinder Kumar Sharma and directed by Neeraj Kant, blended humour with thought-provoking themes, highlighting challenges faced by theatre groups due to the lack of commitment from certain artists.
However, the play remained more inclined towards comedy than being overtly didactic. The story unfolds at the home of Anokhe Lal, a theatre director who has turned his residence into a rehearsal space for an upcoming play scheduled to be staged in a few days. As rehearsals progress, chaos ensues—while the director is deeply committed, the rest of the cast appears disinterested. Actors who once pleaded for a role have now become complacent, frequently making excuses to skip rehearsals.
Adding to the confusion is a newly appointed servant, who unintentionally creates more problems every time he enters the room. Anokhe Lal grows increasingly anxious, as the actors keep forgetting their lines, rehearsals are constantly delayed, and—most critically—the tickets for the show have already been sold. The situation reaches a crisis when the actor playing the father of the hero withdraws from the play due to an unexpected trip. Left with no choice, Anokhe Lal persuades his servant to step into the role, despite his reluctance. However, matters spiral out of control when Anokhe Lal’s real father unexpectedly arrives. In a hilarious mix-up, the servant introduces himself as Anokhe Lal’s father, leading to utter confusion and culminating in a comical but chaotic beating for both the servant and Anokhe Lal at the hands of the real father.
The play featured performances by Kananpreet Kaur, Aadesh Dhar, Adaksh Bagal, Kushal Bhat, Vishal Sharma, and Sanket. The lighting was executed by Mohd. Yaseen, with sound design by Kartik Kumar and presentations by Aryan Sharma. Natrang’s Sunday Theatre continues to provide a platform for meaningful yet entertaining performances, keeping the essence of live theatre alive in the region.
