Jammu, Nov 10: GLDM, GDC Hiranagar in collaboration with GDC Samba and GDC Vijaypur organized a two-day workshop on Bharatanatyam on November 9 and 10. Monica Chanda, the Bharatanatyam Expert from Shillong, Meghalaya was the trainer for the workshop.
The workshop was held in two sessions; one at GDC Samba and one at GLDM GDC Hiranagar every day. The workshop at GDC Samba was inaugurated by the Principal of the College and at GLDM GDC Hiranagar by Prof. Shujaut Khan, Coordinator IQAC and Head Department of Computer Sciences.
The expert trainer Monica Chanda is dancer of a major form of Indian classical dance that is Bharatanatyam which had originated in Tamil Nadu which expresses South Indian religious themes and spiritual ideas, particularly of Shaivism and in general of Hinduism. The form of classical dance is noted for its fixed upper torso, bent legs and knees flexed (Arai mandi) combined with spectacular footwork, and a sophisticated vocabulary of sign language based on gestures of hands, eyes, and face muscles. Monica Chanda is Bharat Nirman Awardee and General Council Member of Sangeet Natak Akademi. The workshop was attended by participants from three different Colleges. Around 70 students participated in the workshop.
Prof. Shujat Khan in his inaugural address praised the efforts of Dr. Bharat Bhushan, Head Department of Music, Dr. Mukesh Kumar, Dr. Arun Kumar and Vikram Jamwal in organizing programmes of National relevance. Such programmes, he said, contribute a lot to the skill development of students which is an important part of the co-curricular activities for the students. Principal GDC Samba and GDC Vijaypur also praised the organisers and Monica Chanda.
