National Girl Child Day celebrated at Budgam

To celebrate the women achievers of the district and to sensitize stakeholders regarding the importance of gender empowerment, a daylong seminar on ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padao’ (BBBP) was today organised by District Administration in collaboration with Social welfare Department Budgam at Sheikh-ul-Alam Hall, here.

The seminar was presided over by the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Budgam, S F Hamid.

The seminar among others was attended by ADDC Budgam, Dr. Akramullah Tak; ADC Budgam Dr. Nasir; Chief Education Officer, DSWO, DIO, DHEW all concerned Supervisors, Anganwadi/ Asha workers and a large number of Girl students besides others.

Speaking on the occasion, the DC said that the aim of observing this day is to treat girl child equal to male child in all respects, and pay sincere heed to her needs on similar parameters a male child is receiving.

The DC said Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) of the United Nations has been designed to bring the world to various life-changing “Zeros” by 2030, which includes discrimination against women and girls too. Target-5 of the Goals is specifically concerned with Gender equality and empowerment of all girls.

He further said, if we give education to a girl, it means we have educated the whole family, given the fact that mother is the first and prime educator for a child.

The DC said that during the present era, girl students are competing in every field particularly in competitive exams. He further said, Prosperous and intelligent societies require equal interventions from talented female gender, in order to materialize that we must grow a girl child in every aspect, put confidence in her, support her that she requires so that she is able to face any challenge shoulder to shoulder along with male gender.

On the occasion District Social Welfare Officer, Dr. Farhana Asgar raised awareness regarding the schemes under implementation in the district. She also highlighted the achievements made under various schemes/ programmes.

She said our focus will be to carry out mass awareness on sex discrimination besides the department is organising Nukkad Nataks, Skits depicting and demonstrating slogans and awareness about Gender sensitisation.

On the occasion CEO Budgam, Mushtaq Ahmad highlighted the importance of education of the girl child for the socio-economic upliftment and equality of women folk.

During the daylong programme many scintillating cultural programmes including skits were presented by the professional artists.

Later, the DC distributed awards, certificates, mementos to the students, athletes, workers and other persons who had demonstrated excellence in their respective fields.
