Narcotics fight in J&K gains momentum : J&K DGP

Srinagar, Sept 22:
The Jammu and Kashmir Police have intensified their crackdown on the narcotics trade, achieving a notable rise in convictions and property seizures in the first seven months of this year.
Speaking at a press conference on Sunday, Director General of Police (DGP) R.R. Swainemphasized the increased momentum in combating drug-related crimes across the Union Territory. “The police have secured 150 convictions so far this year, with 12 cases being discharged, reflecting steady progress in our anti-narcotics efforts,” he stated.
“Since the start of the year, the police have secured 150 convictions, while 12 cases have been discharged. This steady improvement shows that despite challenges, our efforts are bearing fruit,” Swain said.
A notable achievement in the crackdown has been the increase in property seizures related to narcotics, which have surged by 40-45% over the past year. “It’s not just about the number of properties we seize but the value they represent,” Swain remarked, noting that the value of seized properties had increased by 20%, underscoring the financial impact on those involved in the drug trade.
Among the key successes, the DGP highlighted a recent case in Kupwara, where two individuals were sentenced to 20 years in prison for possession of 15 packets of heroin. Swain praised the officers involved, commending their “tireless dedication” in ensuring this outcome.
Despite these gains, Swain acknowledged ongoing challenges, particularly with witness testimony. “One of our biggest hurdles is the reluctance of witnesses to come forward and testify,” he said, calling for urgent reforms to strengthen the witness protection system to prevent delays or derailments in cases.
Retired police officers continue to play a role in the fight against narcotics, with many offering their expertise to assist in ongoing investigations. “It’s encouraging to see that even after retirement, officers are still committed to the cause,” Swain added.
The DGP reaffirmed the department’s resolve to aggressively pursue drug-related cases, vowing that no stone would be left unturned in securing convictions. “We will see every case through to its logical conclusion to ensure justice is served,” he concluded.
