Srinagar, Nov 23: Director General of Police (DPG), Dilbag Singh Wednesday said that narcotics was more dangerous crime than terrorism. He said terrorism only affects individuals but narcotics destroy entire families hence impacting the whole society
Addressing a press conference in Anantnag, DGP Singh said the Jammu and Kashmir Police have taken a pledge to end the crimes related to narcotics and have registered over 500 cases in the region.
“The accused are being arrested whether they are residing in or outside the Union Territory. We are reaching back to them and making strong cases against them in court. We are putting them behind the jails and in some cases have seized properties as well,” he said.
DGP Singh said that it is for time that number of both local and foreign terrorists has reduced to two digits only. The security and crime situation in south Kashmir has improved as compared to previous years. No major crime incident has been reported in the area, the police chief said.
“Army, CRPF, SSB and Police are working in a synergy and it has drawn good results on the ground. It has also improved our relations with the public. Public issues are being addressed through ‘Thana Divas’ discussions and they are resolved on the spot. There were no complaints about the conduct of forces in the entire Kashmir,” he said.
DGP Singh said the number of active terrorists in south Kashmir is concerned, it is as less as it was never before. This is for the first time that the number of total active terrorists has been brought to two digits,” he said and credited the synergy among the various security agencies and local people for the success, he said.
Killings of non-locals and minority community members, he said that these acts are highly condemnable and barbaric in nature. “Those involved in the innocent killings were killed in various encounters,” he said.
“People should take migrant labourers and provide them a sense of security.  People have expressed strong resentment against targeting migrant laborers. There is need to take more care of them and raise a strong voice against terrorists and their supporters,” he said.
DGP Singh said society should collectively counter the false narrative launched by the neighboring country including the Kashmir Fight blog that issues threats to journalists and other people.
“There is a frustration among the people sitting across as those who would issue hartal and provoke youth for stone pelting are nowhere and have been cleaned. The calls issued by the fake chapter of Hurriyat across the border are being ignored by the people of Kashmir, he added.
DGP Singh said ISI and Pakistan-based agencies are running fake narratives, parents should take caution against such activities and monitor their wards to fall prey to these things. Social and religious leaders should take a lead role in these things, he said.
