Poonch, Dec 24: After remaining closed for several days due to heavy snowfall, the historic Mughal Road, the only vital road link connecting Rajouri and Poonch districts with the Kashmir Valley, has been reopened for public traffic. The road was closed following intense snowfall, which severely disrupted movement and posed serious risks to commuters. Soon after the closure, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) launched an extensive snow clearance operation. Despite facing extreme weather conditions and multiple challenges, BRO teams successfully cleared snow from both sides of the road. Following the clearance, Officer Commanding (OC) BRO Ashish Ranjan, along with officials from the Traffic Police and Civil Administration, conducted a thorough inspection of the road stretch from Poshana to Pir Gali to assess safety conditions. Upon completion of the inspection, the road was officially reopened for public movement, restoring a crucial lifeline for the people of the region. Speaking on the occasion, SDM Surankote Farooq Ahmad Khan said that the decision to reopen the Mughal Road was taken in the interest of public convenience. However, he cautioned that due to melting snow and freezing temperatures at several locations, ice core formation on the road surface poses a serious threat to vehicular movement and increases the risk of accidents. Keeping public safety as the top priority, the administration has imposed time restrictions for travel on the Mughal Road. As per the advisory, no vehicle will be allowed to cross Chandi Marh before 10:00 AM, and movement on the Mughal Road will not be permitted after 4:00 PM. These restrictions have been enforced to prevent travel during hours when ice core formation becomes severe, and visibility and road grip are compromised. The administration has appealed to the general public to strictly follow the issued travel advisory, cooperate with the authorities, and exercise maximum caution while travelling on the road. Commuters are advised to drive slowly, use anti-skid measures where possible, and avoid unnecessary travel to prevent accidents. Authorities reaffirmed that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure the safety of commuters and protect human lives while maintaining connectivity in this strategically and socially important region.
