Kargil, Oct 13: The eagerly awaited 1st UT Ladakh Boxing Championship 2024 began on Sunday at the SAI Training Centre, Kargil. This historic three-day event, organized by the Ladakh Amateur Boxing Association, has brought together athletes from both Kargil and Leh districts, marking a new chapter in the region’s sporting achievements.
Member of Parliament, Ladakh, Haji Hanifa Jan, inaugurated the event as Chief Guest. Col Rupan Chaterjee of Project VIJAYAK was the Guest of Honour. The inauguration was also attended by prominent figures including Col Thakur, Syed Mehraj Uddin Shah (General Secretary, District Kargil Olympic Association), Anayat Ali (General Secretary, Ladakh Taekwondo Association), Mohd Asadiq Shalti (Vice President, Archery Association Ladakh), sports activist Ammanullah Khan, along with parents and supporters.
In his address, MP Haji Hanifa Jan shared his passion for sports and the pride he feels seeing athletes from Ladakh excel on national and international platforms. “I’m delighted to witness such dedication, particularly the increasing support from parents for their children, especially girls, to pursue sports as a profession. This is a wonderful sign for the future of sports in Ladakh,” he said. Haji Hanifa also assured that he would meet with sports associations soon to create a plan to improve sports infrastructure and opportunities in the region.
Col Rupan Chaterjee commended the progress made in Kargil’s sporting environment, applauding the athletes for their professionalism. “It’s impressive to see such enthusiasm and skill, showing that sports have truly reached every corner of our country,” he added.
TanzinG Chogyal Mankhangpa General Secretary of the Ladakh Amateur Boxing Association, expressed his gratitude to MP Ladakh for his support, emphasizing that the event is a result of six years of hard work by the Association. “This championship is the culmination of our efforts over the past six years, and we’re confident that it will continue to grow and improve in the years to come,” said Chogyal. He also noted that this championship will be crucial for selecting athletes for the upcoming National Championship.
The event has generated great excitement, with numerous athletes competing for the opportunity to represent Ladakh at the national level.
