Srinagar, Oct 06: The much-anticipated 15th edition of the Mohammad Yousuf Memorial Cricket Tournament 2023 commenced with a thrilling inaugural match that left spectators on the edge of their seats. The prestigious championship, dedicated to the memory of the legendary cricketer Mohammad Yousuf, was formally declared open by Prof. (Dr.) Khurshid Ahmad Khan, Principal of Islamia College of Science and Commerce, Srinagar.
Twenty-four (24) teams representing Degree Colleges from across the picturesque Kashmir Valley have gathered to compete for the coveted championship trophy, showcasing their cricketing prowess.
In the inaugural match, Amar Singh College, Srinagar, squared off against Government Degree College, Aloochi Bagh, Srinagar, in a clash that lived up to the tournament’s reputation for high-quality cricket. Principal Prof. Khurshid Ahmad Khan interacted with both teams before the match, engaging in a pleasant exchange on the nuances of the game with members of the Host College’s Sports Committee.
Amar Singh College won the toss and elected to field, putting the pressure on Government Degree College, Aloochi Bagh. Despite a promising start, the Aloochi Bagh team could only manage to post a score of 136/8 wickets in their stipulated 20 overs, with Hayat leading the way by top-scoring with an impressive 74 runs off 49 deliveries. Amar Singh College’s Ashiq and Shahid proved to be the bowling heroes, taking 3 and 2 wickets respectively.
The batsmen of Amar Singh College looked in control throughout their innings, reaching the target in just 18 overs while losing 8 wickets. Moomin played a crucial role, scoring 37 off 19 deliveries, and Majid contributed with a quickfire 28. Hayat and Mohsin from Government Degree College, Aloochi Bagh, claimed 2 wickets each.
In recognition of his outstanding performance, Moomin was adjudged the Man of the Match, earning the praise and admiration of fans and fellow players alike.
The tournament is being officiated by a neutral panel of officials, ensuring fairness and adherence to the rules of the game. A large number of enthusiastic spectators witnessed the contest, which was played in high spirits, adding to the tournament’s vibrant atmosphere.
Cricket fans can look forward to the next match of this thrilling tournament, scheduled for October 6th, between the Govt. College of Education M.A. Road and Government Degree College Uttersoo.
