‘LG has assured me on the same: Sajjad Shafi’

Srinagar, May 12: MLA Uri Dr Sajjad Shafi on Tuesday strongly pitched for granting ST-2 status to the entire Uri sub-division, urging Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to address the long-pending demand on priority.
Speaking during the Vibrant Villages Programme at Uranbuwa in Uri, where the Lieutenant Governor was also present, Sajjad said the inclusion of the entire sub-division under ST-2 category would significantly benefit the local population in areas such as education, employment, and welfare schemes.
“This is a long-pending demand for the people of Uri. Granting ST-2 status to the entire sub-division will provide much-needed benefits to the local population. I appeal to LG Manoj Sinha to take up the matter on priority,” he said.
Highlighting similarities in geography and ethnicity with other areas already covered under the category, the MLA said regions like Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu division, as well as Tangdhar in Kashmir, had already been granted ST-2 status.
“You can yourself see the topography and ethnicity of Uri. Despite this, the entire Uri sub-division is yet to receive ST-2 status,” he said, adding that the Lieutenant Governor had assured him that Uri and Boniyar would be granted the status.
During his address, the MLA also raised several developmental concerns related to the constituency. He sought enhanced compensation for fully and partially damaged houses affected during Operation Sindoor last year and urged the administration to ensure adequate relief and rehabilitation for affected families.
Sajjad further demanded a special police recruitment drive for the youth of Uri, stressing that youngsters from border areas should be given preference in recruitment processes in recognition of their sacrifices, dedication, and the strategic importance of the region.
He also called for greater employment opportunities and enhanced developmental support for Uri constituency, saying the border region deserved special attention owing to its geographical and strategic significance.
On behalf of the people of Uri constituency, the MLA thanked the Lieutenant Governor and the Government of India for prioritising the development of Uri and addressing the concerns of its residents. He appreciated the continued focus on the welfare and progress of the border region.
