Anantnag, Nov 05: Reyaz Ahmad Khan, the Member of the Legislative Assembly representing the National Conference (NC), has committed to tackling the pressing needs of his constituency.
He emphasized that his primary focus will be on providing basic amenities and unlocking the tourism potential of Chattapal, a picturesque tourist destination within Shangus.
Khan highlighted the impact of a six-year gap without an elected government, stating, “This led to a disconnect, with bureaucrats prioritizing job security over public welfare.” With the recent establishment of a government following the 2024 elections, he acknowledged that public expectations are understandably high.
The MLA pointed out the multitude of challenges facing Shangus, including urgent needs for drinking water, roads, electricity, and healthcare. He noted that while a Sub-District Hospital (SDH) has been constructed in Shangus, the lack of available doctors remains a critical issue. Additionally, he identified the need for improvements in road connectivity and key water supply schemes, particularly in Kheribal and Nanil.
Khan emphasized the local economy’s dependence on agriculture and horticulture, advocating for the establishment of a fruit mandi and cold storage facilities to enhance market access and reduce unemployment.
“These facilities would stabilize income for our farmers and create jobs,” he explained. Infrastructure projects such as road widening and blacktopping are also essential for improving mobility and access.
Addressing the issue of unemployment, he highlighted the struggles faced by educated youth in the constituency. Khan pledged to advocate for the regularization of daily wagers in various departments, including rural development, health, forest, and PHE, while pushing for their inclusion under the Minimum Wages Act.
Under the leadership of Omar Abdullah, Khan expressed optimism about the government’s commitment to alleviating the challenges faced by the community. “I am fully committed to cooperating in efforts to meet the people’s needs,” he stated.
Khan sees potential in Chattapal as a source of livelihood if its attractions are developed appropriately. “This place could significantly benefit the community if given the necessary attention,” he noted.
He also raised concerns about the overloaded electricity receiving stations in the constituency, stating that many areas are metered on paper but receive inadequate power supply. “I am determined to address these issues and bring meaningful relief to my constituency,” Khan concluded.
