Srinagar,May 24 : Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Sunday expressed deep anguish over the tragic death of a 12-year-old girl in Budgam, describing the incident as “heartbreaking” and a matter that has “shaken the conscience of every human being.”

In a post shared on X, the Mirwaiz said the minor had reportedly gone missing while on her way to a Darsgah (religious learning center), and stressed that the circumstances surrounding her death had created widespread fear, grief, and anxiety among residents.

“What are we becoming as a society if our children cannot even feel safe on their way to seek education and guidance?” he wrote, calling for collective introspection and accountability.

The senior cleric urged authorities to conduct a “thorough, transparent and time-bound investigation” into the case and demanded that those responsible be identified and prosecuted under the law.

He further called for the “strictest punishment” for the perpetrators if found guilty.

The incident has triggered shock and sorrow across Kashmir, with many citizens and community leaders demanding swift action and stronger measures to ensure the safety of children.

Mirwaiz also conveyed condolences to the bereaved family, praying that the deceased child be granted “the highest place in Jannah” and that her family be given patience and strength during their time of grief.
