Ganderbal, May 3: Mehbooba Mufti on Sunday launched a sharp attack on the Government alleging that key educational and cultural institutions in Jammu and Kashmir are being systematically targeted.

Speaking to reporters in Ganderbal after a party convention the PDP president raised concerns over the reported closure of institutions such as Siraj-ul-Uloom claiming that such actions are affecting poor students who rely on these centres for both religious and secular education.

She said scholars and local communities are deeply worried about what she described as a pattern of shutting down institutions catering to Muslim students.

She alleged that these steps form part of a larger agenda aimed at weakening cultural and linguistic identity including attempts to sideline Urdu in the region.

Highlighting employment concerns Mufti pointed to alleged livelihood losses along the Nallah Sindh stating that mechanisation has displaced local workers.

Poor people who depended on this for income have been left jobless, she said, adding that unemployment continues to remain a serious challenge.

She also accused the government of favouritism in recruitment alleging that job opportunities are being unfairly distributed. According to her while thousands of applicants are struggling for employment a select few are benefiting from political connections.

On the controversy surrounding Urdu language requirements she referred to past and recent government orders claiming inconsistency in official positions.

She said a 2009 order made Urdu mandatory whereas a 2026 order mentions only graduation without any reference to the language. “If this is the case and still claims are made, otherwise what can I do, " she remarked questioning Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.

Reiterating her party’s stance Mehbooba Mufti said the PDP would continue to engage with people across regions to highlight their grievances and seek redressal.
