Jammu, Nov 05: A meeting bringing together a cross-section of displaced Kashmiri Pandits, including direct victims of terrorism and turmoil, convened at Jagti Township to discuss the pressing issues faced by the community. The gathering provided a comprehensive forum to address challenges surrounding the rehabilitation and re-integration of Kashmiri Pandits into their ancestral society, as well as concerns over demographic imbalances threatening the community’s survival.
With the democratic government in place in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir following recent elections, attendees expressed optimism that longstanding grievances of the Kashmiri Pandit community, which had been overlooked by previous regimes, would now be given serious attention.
The meeting was presided over by Dilip Kumar Pandita under the patronage of Moti Lal Pandita, Chairman. Core committee members in attendance included Girdhari Lal Raina, Vir Ji Raina, Ajay Bhat, Mahraj Krishan Raina, Surinder Kumar Bhat, Satish Thaploo, T.K. Dhar, and Rajinder Dhar. After detailed discussions, the community leaders adopted a series of resolutions to be presented to the government, emphasizing the urgent need for focused interventions.
Key resolutions passed include, Return and Rehabilitation Policy: The development of a comprehensive policy for the safe return and rehabilitation of Kashmiri Pandits, crafted in consultation with camp residents, to ensure sustainable reintegration.
Truth and Reconciliation Commission: The establishment of a commission to investigate and hold accountable those responsible for genocidal acts against Kashmiri Pandits, fostering healing and justice.
Reservation in Central Government Jobs: Advocacy for reservation in Group C and D central government jobs, along with a five-year age relaxation, akin to provisions for other victims of communal violence.
Enhanced Relief for Families: Revising relief assistance to account for family size, with proportional increases for larger families to ensure adequate support.
Nullification of Distress Sales: The nullification of property sales made under duress to protect the rights of displaced families.
Introduction of a Genocide Bill: The proposal for a bill in the Indian Parliament to officially recognize the genocide of Kashmiri Pandits and ensure accountability for past atrocities.
Compensation for Over-aged Youth: A one-time compensation package to support over-aged youth in starting sustainable livelihood initiatives.
Medical Assistance for Migrants: Providing comprehensive healthcare for Kashmiri migrants, including regular check-ups and access to necessary medical treatments.
Allotment of Business Spaces: Allocating shops or spaces to small business owners from the community to facilitate economic stability.
Support for Terrorism Victims of All Communities: A policy ensuring adequate assistance to victims of terrorism, acknowledging the broader spectrum of affected communities.
