In a significant achievement for Kupwara district, the first-ever thyroidectomy surgery in the government sector was successfully conducted at Associated Hospital GMC Handwara.
According to doctors who performed this maiden surgery, “The patient, a middle-aged woman, had been suffering from progressively increasing neck swelling for the past 5–6 years.” “After thorough investigations, it was diagnosed as multinodular goitre, which required surgical intervention.”
They said Dr. Imran performed a right hemithyroidectomy surgery along with a central neck dissection on the patient. The excised specimen was found to be around 4×5 cm in size.
“The entire procedure lasted for about an hour and went smoothly without any complications.” “A remarkable aspect of the surgery was that there was no need for a drain, which indicates the high surgical expertise and precision of the team.”
The team that assisted this maiden surgery were Dr. Owais and Dr. Tazeem, and the entire OT team deserves commendation for their contribution to the success of this groundbreaking surgery. This achievement is significant not only for Kupwara but also for the entire region, where people with similar health issues can now avail of quality treatment in the government sector.
