Kulgam, Feb 25: The Municipal Council (MC) of Kulgam on Saturday made public announcements to dispel rumors about the property tax, and assured the residents that the tax is “quite low” and “part of development”.
In the public announcement, an MC official advised people not to believe rumors about property tax. “All Kulgam town residents are urged not to believe property tax rumors. The tax is quite low,” he announced, adding, “The property tax is part of the development prospectus and an adverse image about it should not be believed.”
The announcement clarified that there would be no tax on agricultural land, tiny dwellings, or religious and cremation places.
“If anyone has any questions on property tax, we are here to clear those. People can contact the MC Kulgam if they have any doubts,” an official told Rising Kashmir, adding, “We hope the people will understand the importance of property tax and the role it plays in the development.”
Executive Officer, MC Kulgam, Mohammad Irfan told Rising Kashmir that the commercial properties up to 100 SqFt within the limits of MC Kulgam will have to pay an amount ranging from Rs 39 to 64.52 annually.
“On residential properties which are above 1000 SqFt and up to 1500 SqFt within the limits of MC Kulgam will have to pay an amount ranging from 133 to 192 rupees annually,” he said, adding that tax rate in J&K is one of the lowest in the country.
Notably, the government has announced a property tax notification which will be implemented throughout the UT urban areas from April. The government has made it clear that no property tax will be levied on residential houses built in an area below 1000 SqFt It will be charged annually not monthly.
