Srinagar, Dec 28: The Power Development Department (PDD) officials said on Saturday that they have restored a majority of the power supply in the Kashmir Valley following the disruption caused by heavy snowfall on Friday. The snowfall, the first major one of the season, had led to major disruptions in power supply across the valley, especially in south Kashmir parts.
Managing Director of KPDCL, Mehmood Ahmad Shah, stated that the snowfall damaged power infrastructure, especially in South Kashmir. However, the department restored 1,200 out of 1,226 feeders, ensuring that electricity supply was resumed in most areas. Shah added that efforts are underway to restore the remaining feeders, and they hope to complete the task soon.
The snowfall also resulted in damage to numerous transformers due to overloading. Officials assured that these issues are being reviewed and addressed promptly. “Our teams were ready to tackle the weather situation, and we remain on standby to mitigate any inconvenience to the public,” said a senior official.
In light of the power disruption, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah reviewed the situation and directed the department to expedite the restoration process. The Chief Minister emphasized the importance of minimizing the challenges faced by the public during such events.
PDD officials have also assured residents that helpline numbers are operational to address any power-related emergencies. They urged people to report issues promptly to ensure timely resolution.
The heavy snowfall on Friday resulted in the disconnection of several power supply lines across the valley, including in remote areas. Despite the challenges, the department’s proactive measures have ensured that the power scenario in the valley is gradually stabilizing.
The officials reiterated their commitment to maintaining a swift response to weather-related disruptions, ensuring the residents of Kashmir face minimal difficulties during harsh winters.
