Kargil, Feb 27: A massive avalanche struck on the Kargil-Zanskar national highway near Tangol on Thursday, a location notorious for frequent avalanches. A topline snow clearance operator working on the route narrowly escaped the disaster.
According to official sources, this stretch of the highway has a grim history of deadly avalanches. In 2023, two women tragically lost their lives in a similar incident.
The Kargil-Zanskar Highway serves as a lifeline for thousands of residents in Prakachik, Tangol, Rangdum, and Zanskar, providing essential connectivity and access to crucial supplies.
In a related development, reports indicate that another avalanche occurred near Minamarg in the Drass division. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported. Meanwhile, the Zanskar Police demonstrated exceptional bravery and efficiency in a daring rescue mission yesterday. A seriously ill monk from the remote Bardan Monastery was successfully evacuated despite extreme weather conditions, ensuring his timely medical treatment.
After receiving information about the monk’s deteriorating health, Station House Officer (SHO) Police Station Zanskar, Inspector Stanzin Gyalson, immediately informed in-charge SDM Zanskar, Mohd Hassan, and coordinated with relevant departments for an emergency evacuation. A police team, accompanied by an ambulance from CHC Padum and a JCB from the mechanical department, was dispatched to clear avalanche-blocked routes.
Battling heavy snowfall and strong winds, the team reached the monastery, evacuated the patient, and transported him to CHC Padum for urgent medical care. Their swift response and unwavering commitment played a pivotal role in saving a precious life. The rescue mission has been widely applauded, highlighting the dedication and selfless service of the Zanskar Police and administration in ensuring public safety under the most challenging conditions.
