Baramulla, Jan 01: Jammu and Kashmir Police said that a marriage scam was uncovered in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, leading to the arrest of a fraudster on Monday.
According to a police official, they received a written application from Mushtaq Ahmad Bhat, residing in Hudpora Khaitangan, stating that his brother’s marriage ceremony was scheduled for December 31, 2023.
The prospective bride was supposed to be brought from Thana Mandi Rajouri.
However, the families involved were unfamiliar, and communication through the intermediary, Sharif Ahmad Gaasi of Kakapora Pulwama, went unanswered.
“In response, a case under relevant sections of the law was registered at Police Station Baramulla, and an investigation was initiated,” stated the police official.
Taking swift action, the police at Delina Police Post, through diligent efforts and technical means, traced the intermediary in Srinagar.
During preliminary inquiry, it was revealed that the person had fraudulently exploited the family under the pretext of marriage, illegally obtaining an amount totalling Rs. 1.18 lakhs.
The accused was arrested in connection with the case and taken to Police Station Baramulla, where he remained in custody.
Police said that the investigation is ongoing to gather further details.
