Srinagar, Feb 07: A 65-year-old man was charred to death in a fire incident, here at Qamarwari on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday.
The deceased who has been identified as Bashir Ahmad Baba, son of Abdul Gani Baba suffered major burn injuries in a fire incident and was shifted to a nearby hospital, where on-duty doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Fire and emergency officials told Rising Kashmir that they, after receiving a call from the scene at 12:24 a.m., arrived quickly to douse the flames.
They said that in the meantime, an old man had suffered burn injuries and was dead on the spot.
In the incident, he said, a house also suffered minor damage, and the cause of the fire is being investigated by the police.
Locals in the area said when they heard a commotion, they swung into action to douse the fire, and were quickly joined by fire fighters.
The relatives of the family have urged the administration to rehabilitate the affected family as they have lost shelter in the fire incident.
The city of Srinagar is seeing a significant increase in fire incidents, with the majority of them occurring during the winter. Last year, the city reported more than 200 fire incidents in which property worth millions was gutted into ashes.
The department of fire and emergency management is labelling people’s negligence responsible for the rise in fire incidents. They believe that people are leaving their gadgets unattended during the night hours, which is causing fire incidents in the city.
