All STPs functional, no encroachment to be allowed: New VC
Srinagar, May 8: Days after assuming the charge as Vice Chairman Lake Conservation and Management Authority (LCMA), Khurshid Ahmad Shah on Friday said to have started a massive dweeding process within the famous water body, stating that the Dal Lake will be a model in Jammu & Kashmir soon.
Speaking exclusively with Rising Kashmir, VC Khurshid Ahmad Shah said that dozens of machines have been deployed in Dal Lake to remove the weeds from the water body. He added that the flowing weeds within the Dal Lake are being removed manually—the process has been outsourced.
He added that the LCMA has deployed dozens of machines at present in Foreshore and other sides to remove the weeds with an aim to maintain the cleanliness of the water body.
Shah stated that the process is already going on and it will continue to maintain the hygiene and sanitation in Dal Lake, adding that it is not possible to remove the weeds in one go keeping in view multiple issues. “We will have to take care of multiple things, especially preserving the water body as well,” the VC-LCMA said.
“We have been working at a pace to maintain the cleanliness. I have been given a new task and hopefully, we will succeed in making the Dal lake a model,” he added.
Asked about the encroachments within Dal Lake, he said that a team has already been formed for the purpose. “We are not only looking after the interiors of Dal Lake but around the water body like green belts as well. We will never allow any encroachment within or around the Dal Lake,” he said.
Reacting to the reports about malfunctioning of Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs), he said a total of 5 plants are already set up in Dal Lake. He said all these STPs are presently functional and the reports about malfunctioning are baseless.
Pertinently, the STPs having a capacity of 36.70 Minimal Liquid Discharge (MLD) were sanctioned under National Lake Conservation Plan (NLCP) at a cost of Rs 21.46 crore. The STPs were installed (2006 to 2013) by the firm M/s Thermax Limited at a cost of Rs 45.01 crore. The STPs not only reduce pollution levels in Dal Lake but also ensure that residents can continue their traditional livelihoods with improved living standards.
