Srinagar, Feb 21: Shameema Raina, President of the Congress Mahila Wing in Jammu and Kashmir, on Wednesday addressed the pressing issue of “escalating inflation” affecting households across the country.
Speaking at a press conference held at the Congress headquarters in Srinagar, Raina said, “The failed policies of the Narendra Modi government have exacerbated the financial strain on homemakers, who tirelessly manage family, finances, and well-being.”
Shameema said there has been a drastic rise in prices of essential commodities, underscoring the challenges faced by households. She pointed out that staple vegetables like tomatoes and onions have nearly doubled in price, reaching 270/kg and 235/kg respectively. Even potatoes have witnessed a surge, soaring from Rs 15/kg to Rs 225/kg.
Raina drew attention to the soaring prices of LPG cylinders, an essential component of countless kitchens. With prices hitting 1050, families are forced to limit gas usage, impacting both health and hygiene.
Expressing concern over the government’s inaction, the Congress leader criticized the Prime Minister’s silence on the plight of homemakers and the lack of effective measures to control inflation over the past decade. She highlighted the disparity between the government’s focus on writing off loans for big industrialists, amounting to Rs 10 lakh crore, and the neglect of addressing the needs of common households.
Raina praised Rahul Gandhi’s advocacy for the marginalized, citing his Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra as a testament to his commitment to addressing the challenges faced by ordinary citizens. She emphasized Gandhi’s dedication to “policy-driven” politics, advocating for solutions that benefit the common people.
She called for collective action against the politics of distraction, urging the government to prioritize the welfare of homemakers and implement measures to alleviate the burden of inflation on Indian households.
