Srinagar, Dec 09: Fresh snowfall occurred in higher reaches of Kashmir valley while rains lashed several plain areas on Friday. Pertinent to the weather forecast the local met department has predicted inclement weather conditions across Kashmir til Saturday.
Director Meteorological Department, Srinagarr, Sonam Lotus told Rising Kashmir that many plains in the valley witnessed light rains while upper reaches received moderate snowfall on Friday.
Lotus further said there was no forecast of any major snow during this spell. He said however a respite from cold weather was likely expected during the next 2-3 days.
As per MeT data, ski-resort of Gulmarg in Baramulla recorded 4-5 inches of a fresh snowfall, Machil 3 inches, Sonamarg 5 inches, Yousmarg 3 inches, Sinthan Top 2 inches, Minimarg 5 inches, Sadhna Top, 2 inches, Zojila Pass 5 inches, and Drass also received light snowfall till Friday evening.
Meanwhile, intermittent light rains continued in several plain areas throughout the day. The met department revealed that minimum temperatures also settled below freezing point at most places of the valley on Friday night.
Officials said that Srinagar recorded a maximum of 11.2 °C and 1.0°C as the minimum temperature. Ski-resort Gulmarg in north Kashmir recorded a high of 1.5 °C and minimum settled at minus 3.0°C . Gulmarg remained the coldest place in Kashmir.
Health resort Pahalgam recorded 8.0 °C and a minimum of minus 0.7 °C degrees. Qazigund recorded a maximum of 10.5°C respectively and low of minus 0.2° C.
Kupwara in north Kashmir recorded maximum temperatures of 7.8°C, while minimum temperatures settled at minus 1.1°C respectively.
Meanwhile, dense fog continued to engulf many parts including the city as a consequence of which vehicles moved with headlights on during the morning and evening hours.
