Rookie Shaurya Bhattacharya’s late surge secures maiden title at J&K Open 2024
Jammu, Oct 26: Delhi-based rookie Shaurya Bhattacharya showcased a remarkable late-game surge to claim his first professional title at the INR 50 lakh J&K Open 2024, presented by J&K Tourism. Held at the scenic Jammu Tawi Golf Course (JTGC), the 21-year-old Bhattacharya (67-69-73-69) clinched the title with an impressive comeback on the final day, posting a three-under 69 to secure a 10-under 278 total for the tournament. This victory marks him as the first rookie to win on the PGTI in five years.
Bhattacharya’s triumph overshadowed the earlier lead of Gurugram’s Kartik Sharma (71-68-67-74), who was ahead by three strokes entering the final round but faltered with bogeys on the last three holes, finishing at eight-under 280. Kolkata’s Mohammad Sanju (71) claimed third place at five-under 283.
Bhattacharya, who entered the fourth round three strokes behind, demonstrated precision with his tee and approach shots, staying close to the lead with key putts, including a crucial 30-foot birdie on the sixth and a six-foot par putt on the eighth. A decisive birdie on the 15th, followed by a 15-footer on the 16th, helped him level with Kartik, who ultimately dropped out of contention after bogeys on the 17th and 18th holes.
Reflecting on his strategy, Bhattacharya shared, “Today, I focused on staying aggressive and sticking to my gameplan. The birdies on the 15th and 16th gave me confidence, and I’m grateful for the excellent conditions at JTGC and the support from J&K Tourism.”
This win earned Bhattacharya the top prize of INR 7,50,000 and a boost in the TATA Steel PGTI Ranking, propelling him from 47th to 26th.
