Srinagar, Dec 15: To keep Dal Lake neat and clean, the Lakes Conservation and Management Authority (LC&MA) has started desilting detention and retention ponds around Dal Lake.
According to LC&MA official Tanveer Ahmad, the department recently carried out a drive to clean these ponds that are receiving water supply from direct streams or channels.
He said these ponds were full of silt, and water was directly entering Dal Lake, resulting in the lake getting polluted. After the completion of this work, the water from the channels will enter these ponds first, and later the fresh water will flow to Dal Lake.
The officer also said that work on these ponds is in full swing and that around 60 per cent of it is complete. By the end of January, the work will be completed.
The ponds are located near the foreshore, and around five ponds receivedirect water from streams.
“The department is taking every step to make Dal Lake neat and clean to provide tourists with a better experience.”
“All efforts are being made to make Dal Lake fresh, and, in this connection, the department is also installing STPs in all the 650 houseboats whose sewage is directly getting into the lake. The project is also about to be completed, and in the coming month, the majority of the houseboats will be connected to STPs that will save the lake from getting polluted,” the official said.
In addition, the navigation channels are also being restored after a long gap, which will also increase the flow of water channels in Srinagar and add beautification to the surroundings of Srinagar city.
There are several other projects under consideration regarding the beautification of Dal Lake, which include the London-type golden eye, the installation of aerators, and many more things.
