Urges LG to ensure those disturbing peace are dealt with firmly Inaugurates Rs 4.3 cr fruit, vegetable processing centre

Bijhbera (Anantnag), Apr 14: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday declared that lawlessness will not be tolerated in Jammu and Kashmir, referring to the recent Ramban incident, while inaugurating Jashn-e-Amad-e-Bahar, the Spring Festival, at Jablipora in south Kashmir's Anantnag district.

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister said some elements are trying to disturb the atmosphere and incite tensions. "As long as this government remains in place, we will never allow such activities in Jammu and Kashmir," he said.

He urged Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to ensure that those involved in the Ramban incident and attempts to disturb peace are dealt with firmly. "A strong message must go out that such hooliganism and lawlessness will not be allowed in Jammu and Kashmir," he added.

Abdullah said that since his government assumed office around one and a half years ago, efforts have been made to ensure that people begin to see a new phase. He said spring symbolises change in circumstances and represents a new beginning, a new tomorrow, and a transition from difficulty to ease, not only about the season or agriculture but also about a new beginning for Jammu and Kashmir.

Referring to agriculture, the Chief Minister pointed to what he described as a yellow revolution, saying that mustard cultivation, once limited to a few areas, is now visible across the region, increasing production and reducing dependence on outside markets. "This has also opened new avenues for tourism, with tourists now visiting south Kashmir to see mustard fields, where locals have created facilities offering kehwa, traditional bread, and hospitality," he said.

Omar said efforts are also underway to bring a purple revolution through lavender cultivation and a white revolution in Pampore and Pulwama by increasing milk production, processing, and value addition to improve farmers' income. "There is no shortage of opportunities," he said, adding that while nearly 90 per cent of milk is processed in Gujarat, only about 4 per cent is processed in Jammu and Kashmir, and a focused programme has been introduced in the current budget for the dairy sector," he said.

On the challenges faced by farmers due to unpredictable weather, the CM said the government has strengthened the weather-based crop insurance scheme, but expressed concern that farmers are not fully availing its benefits. "I appeal to my farmer brothers and sisters to kindly make full use of this scheme," he said, adding that in the coming days, the government will also implement a weather-based crop insurance scheme for the horticulture sector.

Earlier, the Chief Minister inaugurated a Rs 4.3 crore Fruit and Vegetable Processing Centre at Jablipora and disbursed subsidy support among progressive farmers. He the initiative will strengthen value addition, enhance incomes, and support a resilient agri-economy in Jammu and Kashmir.

Omar also addressed concerns of traders at Jablipora mandi regarding infrastructure and expansion, assuring that the government will develop the mandi into an international-level fruit and vegetable market.
