Langate, Aug 21: As Jammu and Kashmir prepares for its assembly elections from September 18 to October 1, the Langate constituency in Handwara has expressed urgent needs and expectations from the upcoming polls.
Residents of Langate have raised significant concerns about unaddressed issues and failing infrastructure. Despite considerable investments in potable water facilities, the area still lacks a functional water filtration plant.
Local resident Shamim Ahmad from Shanoo, Langate, highlighted, “The absence of clean drinking water is a serious problem. Additionally, around two dozen villages remain isolated from the Tehsil and district headquarters, with two key bridges out of service for five and three years, respectively.”
Road connectivity is another major concern, with many village roads remaining unmacadamized for decades. Villages also suffer from inadequate drinking water and infrastructure, despite repeated promises from previous leaders.
A local student voiced frustration over basic amenities, stating, “Electricity, water, and better roads are fundamental rights. Yet, we deal with unfiltered water, poor road access, and worsening electricity during winters. We need a leader who will not just promise these necessities but also ensure they are delivered.”
Moreover, labourers in Langate have been adversely affected by the Department of Mining and Geology’s recent halt in issuing Government Receipts (GRs). This decision has deprived hundreds of workers, who depend on jobs at Nallah Mawer, of their livelihoods. “Current leaders have failed to address this issue, leaving many families in hardship,” a local laborer noted.
As the elections draw near, the people of Langate are calling for leadership that will effectively address their concerns and bring about tangible improvements.
