Drass, June 25: A massive landslide triggered by heavy rainfall has severely disrupted traffic on the Srinagar-Leh highway after nearly half a kilometer of the road was washed away between Pandrass and Matayan near Drubtigund of UT Ladakh’s Drass Division.
According to reports, the landslide occurred on Wednesday following heavy rains. Huge mounds of debris and slush engulfed the strategic road stretch, cutting off the vital Srinagar-Leh connection and leaving dozens of vehicles stranded on both sides.
Reports confirmed that the affected portion of the road—approximately 500 meters—was completely damaged under the impact of the landslide, making it impassable. Teams from the Project Vijayak and local administration including SDM Drass Vishal Atri rushed to the site to begin immediate restoration work.“Efforts are ongoing to clear the debris and restore the road as soon as possible, said SDM Drass Vishal Atri, No casualties or injuries have been reported so far, he said.
“We are making every effort to clear the road, and it will be restored by tomorrow morning,” he said.
The Srinagar-Leh highway is a critical lifeline for Ladakh, especially during the summer months, connecting the remote region to the rest of the country.
