Srinagar, May 16:In a heartening display of democratic participation, Kupwara district witnessed an exceptional turnout among elderly and Persons with Disabilities (PwD) voters during the LokSabha Polls 2024. Over 94% of eligible individuals availed themselves of the home voting facility introduced by the Election Commission of India.
A total of 412 voters, including senior citizens aged 85 and above, as well as individuals listed under the PwD category, utilized the home voting option. The meticulous efforts of poll officials ensured that 389 voters exercised their franchise during the three-day long home voting process, which concluded successfully.
Among the elderly voters, an impressive 180 out of 194 cast their votes, while 209 out of 218 registered PwD voters seized the opportunity to participate in the electoral process from the comfort of their homes.
The District Election Officer of Kupwara orchestrated a meticulously planned operation, deploying 40 dedicated poll parties who traversed challenging terrains to reach the doorsteps of eligible voters residing in far-flung areas. These efforts exemplified a commitment to ensuring that no eligible voter was disenfranchised due to logistical constraints.
Expressing profound gratitude, home voters commended the Election Commission and the District Election Office Kupwara for extending such a vital service. For many senior citizens and individuals with disabilities, casting their votes from their homes marked a significant milestone, alleviating the logistical challenges posed by their health conditions.
In their expressions of joy and enthusiasm, these voters highlighted the significance of this initiative, emphasizing that it enabled them to exercise their democratic rights with ease and dignity. Many noted that without the home voting option, participating in the electoral process would have been exceedingly difficult.
