Kulgam, July 15:Once renowned primarily for its picturesque Aharbal Waterfall, Kulgam is now increasingly attracting backpackers and adventurers seeking offbeat natural experiences. Throughout the week, explorers are delving into its scenic woods and breathtaking vistas.
The trek to Kousarnag stands out as a favorite, with Kongwattan serving as the base camp. This expansive meadow, nestled amidst tall trees and a gentle stream, offers a serene escape into nature’s wonders.
Malik Basit, an avid trekker, recounted his recent expedition to Hoen Heng, a towering mountain requiring a multi-day trek through sprawling meadows and dense forests.
“For families seeking offbeat destinations, Chiranbal, Panchanpathri, and Kongwattan offer excellent options. For trekking enthusiasts, trails extend to Badibehk, Hakwas, Zajimarg, and alpine lakes like Kousarnag and Brahansar. Kulgam’s beauty unfolds best off-road, providing a unique natural experience,” Basit remarked.
Amjid Rashid, another visitor, noted a surprising increase in fellow trekkers along the Chiranbal route compared to his frequent visits. He emphasized the importance of preserving nature by avoiding plastic and polythene in meadows and lakes.
Hurair Bhat from Qazigund shared his experience camping at Kongwattan, where he observed a significant rise in visitors, with dozens of tents dotting the meadow. He stressed the need to safeguard these pristine areas from environmental harm.
Ghalib Mohi-Ud-Din Shah, CEO of Aharbal Development Authority, reported a substantial influx of tourists to Aharbal, with 229,221 visitors in the past six months, including 143 foreigners and 26,650 from various Indian states.
“The surge in tourism reflects Kulgam’s allure as a destination rich in stunning meadows and alpine lakes that deserve conservation efforts,” Shah affirmed.
