Srinagar, July 07: Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police (DGP) R.R. Swain said on Sunday that the killing of six terrorists in two encounters in Kulgam district was a significant achievement for the security forces in the region.
Talking to media personnel in Srinagar, DGP Swain stated that security forces have reached a major milestone following the neutralization of six terrorists in two separate encounters in Kulgam district of southern Kashmir.
“Encounters are underway in two different areas, and so far, six terrorists have been neutralized. Undoubtedly, this is a significant milestone for the security forces,” he said.
DGP Swain said that these successes are crucial in strengthening the security environment, noting that people are uniting to end terrorism, and the operations are gaining momentum.
“The current operation is still ongoing and has not yet reached its conclusion. We have received reports of the involvement of local terrorists as well,” he added.
“So far, the bodies of six terrorists have been recovered. There were two encounters at separate locations. The killing of six terrorists is clearly a milestone achievement,” DGP Swain said, adding that “operations at one of the sites are still ongoing.”
“Since the operation is still active at one location, it is not yet clear which outfit the slain terrorists belonged to. There is a possibility of local terrorists being involved. Once the operation concludes, we will be able to determine the identities and affiliations of the slain terrorists.”
Regarding the situation in Jammu, he mentioned that there had been a security situation in the region, but things have significantly improved.
“There was an attempt to revive terrorism, but they cannot succeed. There is no environment for the revival of terrorism or its ecosystem in Jammu. We hope the peaceful atmosphere will continue in the region,” he said.
The first encounter occurred between terrorists and security forces in Modergam village. Hours later, another encounter took place in the FrisalChinnigam area of the district. Two soldiers have also been killed in the Kulgam gunfights.
Meanwhile, the Indian Army on Sunday paid tribute to the two soldiers who lost their lives in the line of duty during two separate encounters in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kulgam district, in which six terrorists were also killed.
Lance NaikPradeep Kumar of the elite para unit and PravinJanjalPrabhaker of the Rashtriya Rifles unit were killed during the two gunfights in Modergam and FrisalChinigam in Kulgam district.
Army’s Chinar Corps Cadr, Chief Secretary UT J&K, DGP J&K, other dignitaries, and all ranks paid homage to the two soldiers.
“Chinar Warriors salute the valour and sacrifice of both brave hearts. We stand in solidarity with the bereaved families & are committed to their well-being,” the Indian Army said in a post on X.
The wreath-laying ceremony took place at Badamibagh cantonment in Srinagar on Sunday. “Martyrdom is not the end, it’s the beginning of a Legend,” spokesman said.
A police official wishing anonymity said slain terrorists are affiliated with HizbulMujahideen. HM’s AadilHussainWani from Shopian, Faisal Bashir Lone of KaniporaShopianhave been killed in Madergham encounter and the identification of other 4 terrorists is still underway.
“The encounter at ChanigamFrisalKulgam has ended, and people are urged to avoid the site as it can be dangerous. Meanwhile, at another location, the encounter is ongoing, and searches are underway in the area,” he said.
