Srinagar, May 08: The third terrorist has been killed in a gunfight with security forces in Redwani area of Kulgam district in south Kashmir on Tuesday, officials on Wednesday said.
A police officer confirmed to Rising Kashmir that a third terrorist has been killed on the second day of the encounter in Redwani village and searches are still going in the area.
He said during search of houses near the encounter site in the Redwani area of the district, the fresh exchange of fire took place with a terrorist hiding on Wednesday evening and after a brief gunfight, the slain terrorist was neutralized.
The security forces had launched a cordon-and-search operation in Kulgam’sRedwani village late on Monday night following information about the presence of terrorists in the area.
The official said slain terrorist have not been identified so far. There was an alert and a heightened intelligence grid in south Kashmir. The success is the result of the heightened security grid, he said.
He said although the site of the encounter has been sanitised, the public is requested to avoid going in droves near the site and report any suspicious object to police immediately.
Earlier on Tuesday, two terrorists, including a top commander The Resistance Front (TRF), in an encounter with security forces.
Inspector General of Police Vidhi Kumar Birdi said terrorist Basit Dar belonged to the TRF ‘A’ category and he was involved in more than 18 cases. He was behind the planning conspiracy to attack minorities, police forces and civilians, he said.
“He was an A category terrorist carrying a bounty of Rs 10,000 lakh on his head. Basit has been active since 2021. The reward money was announced by NIA in case 32/2021/NIA/DLI registered against Da, resident of RedwaniPayeen, Kulgam.”
The Police Chief said that the operation concluded on Tuesday afternoon but the search operation to clear the debris from explosives was still going on. The identity of the second slain terrorist was being ascertained, he said.
He said they were given ample time and opportunity to surrender. They did not pay any heed to the caution by police and security forces. The terrorists continued firing upon the security personnel and were killed in the encounter,” he said.
