Damhal Hanjipora (Kulgam), May 08: Kulgam administration has reached out to nomads following a three-inch snowfall in this south Kashmir district’s upper reaches on Monday.
Orchardists demand immediate compensation for the damage caused due to unseasonal snowfall and hailstorms in the area.
Ghulam Nabi, an orchardist from Gulzarabad, told Rising Kashmir, “We had thought that the apple orchards would provide us with financial comfort this season. However, the snow and hailstorms crushed such aspirations.”
“We request that the authorities reach us and compensate us for the damage. Every farmer and orchardist has suffered damage and an immediate assessment should be conducted,” he added.
Meanwhile, on the directions of the Deputy Commissioner Kulgam, Sub Divisional Magistrate Noorabad, and Tehsildar Damhal Hanjipora, along with other officials, visited various remote regions of the Noorabad sub-division to reach out to the people and assess the situation following the unseasonal snowfall.
“After fresh snowfall in the upper reaches of Kulgam, administration rescued many nomadic families and provided them with blankets and food kits,” Bashir ul Hassan, SDM Noorabad, said.
The administration visited Gulzarabad, Dandward, Kutmarg, and D K Marg and distributed urgent supplies to nomads, the SDM said, adding that he has already set up a school for refuge in case anyone has to be relocated.
“Previously impacted orchardists in Kulgam would receive compensation now as their files have been approved,” he added.
