KU hosts inter-dept T20 cricket tournament

Varsity committed to culture of excellence both on and off the field: VC

Srinagar, Apr 26: The Kashmir University (KU) kick-started the much anticipated ‘Inter-Department T20 Cricket Tournament’ in which a total of 45 teams are participating with the inaugural match between the Department of Management Studies and the Department of Mathematics held here on the university grounds.
The Department of Management Studies won the toss and opted to field first, setting the stage for an intense battle on the pitch, an official statement issued here read.
“The Department of Mathematics set a competitive target of 121 runs in 16 overs, led by Danish’s impressive performance with 28 runs. Shakir from the Department of Management Studies bowled exceptionally well, claiming three crucial wickets to stem the opposition’s momentum,” a spokesperson said in the statement.
The Department of Management Studies, achieved the target and courtesy Aaqib’s outstanding batting who scored 41 runs the team could pitch a tough battle.
Aqeel and Nadeem from the Department of Mathematics displayed remarkable bowling skills, securing two wickets each.
As the scores tied, the match proceeded to a nail-biting super over, where the Department of Management Studies displayed exceptional team spirit and emerged victorious. Aaqib was declared the ‘Player of the Match’.
In her message, KU Vice Chancellor, Prof Nilofer Khan extended her good wishes to the players and said that the tournament exemplifies the varsity’s commitment to encourage holistic development and a culture of excellence both on and off the field.
“We are committed to providing world-class facilities and the required platform to our students who have the talent and skills so that they gain training and expertise in their respective traits that we can promote on a bigger stage,” Prof Khan said, adding that student-participation in such activities empowers them to refine their skills and boost their confidence.
Dean, Students Welfare, Prof Shamim A Shah, witnessed the inaugural match and later congratulated the winning team and wished the runners up team luck for the upcoming matches.
“Today’s match not only showcases the spirit of sportsmanship but also underscores the talent and dedication within our academic community,” he added.
Director, Directorate of Physical Education and Sports (DPES), KU, Dr Mandeep Singh, while extending a warm welcome to the participating teams, outlined the essence of organising the tournament.
“Our focus has been our talented youth. Providing them with the right exposure and opportunities to display their talent could prove life-changing in shaping their professional cricketing careers in the T20 format,” Dr Mandeep reiterated.
