Srinagar, July 22: A two-day calligraphy exhibition that began on Saturday at the Kashmir Arts Emporium here provided a ray of hope to local artists as more and more people are beginning to acknowledge and appreciate various indigenous art forms in the valley.
The exhibition is being organised by the Department of Handicrafts Handloom under its ‘Know Your Artist’ initiative. Akin to the other exhibitions under the initiative, this exquisite display of calligraphy attracted a huge audience from different walks of life.
The exhibition features the works of Mohammad Shafi Mir, a 67-year-old Baramulla native and the 40-year-old Shahnawaz Ahmad Sofi from Srinagar. Both artists have their distinct way of calligraphy which became the highlight of the exhibition. While Mir’s work displays the conventional on-paper approach to calligraphy, Sofi is known for combining calligraphy and carpet weaving, attracting onlookers and admirers.
Director Handicrafts and Handloom, Mehmood Ahmad Shah who was present at the event spoke a few words of encouragement and praise for the artists. He pointed out the importance of expanding the opportunities for local artists to display and promote their art.
Talking to Rising Kashmir, Mir recalled his journey in calligraphy and said he developed interest during his service years and started pursuing it as a full-time hobby during the pandemic – after his retirement.
He also appealed to people to keep themselves busy and develop hobbies and interests. “We should not sit idle. No age is old to start something new and hobbies like these can also become a source of income. However, one needs to be patient with this art,” he said.
Shahnawaz also talked about his early experiences with calligraphy and how he felt the need to bring a fresh perspective to it. “These carpets sell a lot in the Gulf countries. Combining these art forms can provide work opportunities and recognition for our artisans,” he said, adding, “Such exhibitions can help artisans showcase their art.”
