Srinagar, May 10: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said Kashmir’s famous golf courses can play a major role in boosting tourism and encouraging local youth to take up golf as a sport.

He made these remarks while inaugurating a golf tournament at the Royal Springs Golf Course in Srinagar on Sunday.

Speaking to reporters, Abdullah said Kashmir has a rich connection with golf and is home to some of the finest golf courses in the country.

“If we talk about the most beautiful golf courses in India, then Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam easily rank among the top,” he said.

The Chief Minister said the government is working to promote golf tourism in Jammu and Kashmir while also helping local players get proper training and opportunities.

“Our focus is to train local golfers and use these world-class courses to attract tourists. Through such tournaments, we want to build a new generation of golfers in Kashmir,” he said.

According to Abdullah, more than 100 golfers, including participants from different parts of India and abroad, are taking part in the tournament.

He noted that many golfers from North India now prefer visiting Srinagar during long weekends to enjoy the sport in Kashmir’s scenic surroundings.

“I hope this growing interest will benefit tourism in the Valley,” he added.

Abdullah further said the government, along with tourism authorities and event organisers, plans to host more golf tournaments in Srinagar and Gulmarg to place Kashmir on the global golfing map.

“The aim is to bring top golfers from across the country, improve sporting facilities and promote golf through better events and outreach,” he said.

He added that the government wants to see greater participation from both local golfers and visiting players.

“We want golfers from the Valley and from outside Jammu and Kashmir to come together and play here,” Abdullah said.
