Leh, Aug 12: A joint meeting between the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) and the Apex Body of Leh was held in Leh. The meeting, which lasted for over three hours, was followed by a joint press conference attended by MP Ladakhi Haji Hanifa Jan, who participated in both the meeting and the press conference.
The core members of the Apex Body Leh and the KDA Kargil came together to discuss the long-standing demands of Ladakh, focusing on four key points that have been central to the region’s aspirations:
The meeting emphasised the need for the implementation of the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution in Ladakh, which aims to safeguard the cultural and land rights of the indigenous people of the region.
The demand for full statehood for Ladakh was discussed, with participants stressing that statehood is essential for ensuring greater autonomy and development for the region.
The meeting highlighted the demand for the creation of two separate Lok Sabha constituencies for Ladakh—one for Kargil and one for Leh—arguing that this would provide better representation for the region’s diverse population.
The establishment of a centralised board for Ladakh’s two autonomous hill development councils was discussed as a means to streamline governance and development initiatives across the region.
MP Haji Hanifa Jan, who was actively involved in the discussions, expressed his support for the demands and reiterated his commitment to raising these issues at the national level.
