JAMMU, Mar 31: The Property Tax, as per the government notification, will come into force from tomorrow i.e 1st of April onwards, however, the Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) have yet to devise the mechanism and work out the different permutations and calculations before going ahead for its realisation in the Union Territory (UT) of J&K.
“The Property Tax is primarily a self assessment of one’s property which he has to disclose,” Mayor, Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC), Rajinder Sharma informed Rising Kashmir, while adding, “We are working out a mechanism to make it easy for the people to file their property details, adding, the proposed property tax will not be imposed from April 1 in Jammu”.
“The ground work for providing QR code and the digital number plate to each house in J&K UT has been going on,” the JMC Mayor informed, while adding, “the work is time consuming and will take some time”.
The property tax can be practically and realistically realised in J&K after the each house is given QR code and the digital number plate, so we are not imposing properly tax from April 1,the JMC Mayor further said.
In Jammu, the JMC has identified around 2 lakh houses which will be given QR code and the digital number plates. The people, by scanning the QR code, can avail all the services provided by the ULBs besides filing complaints regarding lack of services in their area.
The digital number plates will provide exact number of houses and their measurement in terms of area to the ULBs.
Meanwhile, the ULBs have also invited suggestions from the general public regarding property tax and what changes and modifications they want in the property tax.
The suggestions with different ideas are still pouring in from across the J&K UT with people expressing their different views and modifications to be made in the property tax.
“After receiving suggestions from the people, we will approach the Lieutenant Governor (LG), Manoj Sinha and apprise him about the same,” the JMC Mayor further said adding, “People’s aspirations and concerns will be kept in mind and conveyed to the LG before going ahead for realisation of the property tax”.
The BPL people and the vulnerable groups will be the priority, he said.
The ULBs i.e JMC and the SMC will have to collect the property tax and the both the ULBs will also soon come up with a portal where people can file their property details, officials said.
